Working Hard v. Working Whole – There Is a Difference

This topic might seem like a catchy expression, but if you pause to think about it, it has deep significance. This article delves into how it applies to your career now and how you would like to see your career narrative and legacy develop into integrated, authentic leadership.

I have given this a lot of thought, as it is related to my own professional narrative. I started by taking a long look at my own experience with managers whose agenda was to create and foster an unhealthy workplace environment for me and my colleagues, one that was not conducive to fulfilling my career objectives and certainly compromised my enthusiasm.

Many of us work hard and are conditioned to believe that “hard work” means being weighed down by unending, ever-changing, and vaguely explained tasks and responsibilities. Achieving short-term gains with minimal complaint and aligning ourselves with dubious office politics is generally rewarded with external validation, but it also brings additional duties. And, often at great cost to us personally.

The core problem is that leaders wear too many personas, depriving them of the energy to invest in areas that support an authentic leadership approach.

Conversely, what is “whole work”? That can be defined as an integrated effort driven by an authentic purpose. How is that accomplished? First, shed unnecessary professional personas, which I help you identify and evaluate, and determine which, if any, should remain and be part of the legacy you want to create. This is where the real work takes place. The immediate result is clarity, and this cannot be underestimated. It ultimately supports the outcome of establishing yourself as a more credible, efficient, and effective leader, with organizational authority and a long-term impact, who, in turn, normalizes authenticity in the workplace.

This is an eternal legacy worth working hard for: to be whole.

I know you work hard. I want to help you work whole.

No More Busy Idiots - Tuesday, April 14, 2026

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey is known for his direct, blunt assessments of people and situations in his kitchen. In one episode, he used the term “busy idiot.” No doubt, at that moment, his labeling of the kitchen staff’s behavior was accurate. What did he mean? “Busy idiot” applies to individuals who appear “heads down” and are constantly active, yet the tasks they perform offer zero value, despite making a lot of money. While this term may sound funny, it is a provocative concept that can be applied to any line of business. In my consulting engagements, I repeatedly see it as a symptomatic behavioral challenge specific to HR.

With the advent and popularity of AI, the era of the busy idiot is not only jeopardized but is officially over. Automatable tasks are now handled with unprecedented efficiency, effectively reshaping the functions and operations of many departments and business units within an organization. HR is no exception. AI now informs of a critical shift in the role Human Resources plays. The transition demands that HR raise its value and pivot its focus on humanity, fostering authenticity, curiosity, and empathy to lead, inspire, and guide its employees and team members effectively.

HR leaders and professionals would do well to explore ways to reskill their people for strategic and humane aptitudes. In fact, I argue that the function should have always been strategic and humane, rather than cycling between the two.

The concept of eliminating busy idiots advocates for good attrition. When HR fosters a culture that promotes and prioritizes authenticity, trusted and credible leadership ensures that every action is genuine and contributes to both employee well-being and organizational success.

The Paradox of Tenure: A Barrier to Authenticity - Tuesday, February 24, 2026

The longer a leader remains within an organization, the more challenging it becomes to maintain authentic leadership. This is the paradox of tenure. As professionals advance, they form tighter bonds and friendships, which coalesce to form the organization's culture. Over time, strongly entrenched assimilation can lead to a form of "drinking the Kool-Aid," where protecting the relationships and the established culture can, at a minimum, concede genuine, principled behavior; or worse, override it completely.

This assimilation creates a fundamental conflict. While most employees recognize "bad actors" and dysfunctional elements, tenure-based friendships can become a barrier to holding them accountable. The impulse to protect the inner circle—the "group of friends"—can overshadow the need for an authentic response.

Remaining true to oneself in a tenured role is the eternal challenge. It is a delicate balance that demands more than technical skill; it requires a high degree of emotional intelligence, encompassing self-awareness and external awareness, played out with irreprehensible diplomacy. This highlights the disconnect between theoretical research and practical experience within the corporate reality, where the "corporate grind" often works against the ideal of authenticity.

Take action to avoid letting your tenure compromise your integrity. Let me help you navigate the corporate landscape, artfully bypass unspoken cultural barriers, and thrive as an asset to your organization in your authenticity.
